History

The town Trimbak is called as Trimbakeshwar after the temple of Lord Shiva. Linga of Trimbakeshwar temple has three faces which symbolize Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva.

This ancient Hindu temple is built completely using black stones and has a spire topped with a golden trident. The Trimbakeshwar temple is located between three hills – Brahmagiri, Nilagiri and Kalagiri, 3000 feet above sea level.

The temple was built by the third Peshwa Balaji Baji Rao between (1740-1760). You will see pillars and walls of temple carved. The walls are sculpted with floral designs and figures of various gods and goddesses.

There is big idol of Nandi in Mandap area of temple. The mythological story regarding the origin of river Godavari states that the river Godavari originates from the hill of Brahmagiri. However, it disappears from hill and reappears in Kunda near temple.

The Kumbh Mela is held once in 12 years in Trimbkeshwar. Millions of devotees visit during Kumbh Mela and take a holy dip in Godavari to wash their sins. Being a Shiv temple, the festival of Shivratri is celebrated grandly in Trimbakeshawar.

This place is famous for various religious vidhis like Kalsarpa Shanti, Tripindi Vidhi & Narayan Nagbali. Narayanbali is performed only in Trimbakeshwar for three days. Trimbakeshwar town has large number of Brahmins with their ashrams and muths.

The best time to visit is during Monsoon and Winter which is between June to February.

Being surrounded by hills, it will be a pleasure to watch the nature and feel it at the fullest.

As the town is very small, you can easily take a walk to visit nearby places.
