History

In 1348 AD, Karauli was officially established. Kalyanpuri was the original name of this holy city, named after the local deity Kalyanji. According to historians, Raja Bijal pal Jadon, the 88th descendant of Lord Krishna, founded the princely state of Karauli in 995 AD.
Karauli’s ruling family is thought to be the descendants of Lord Krishna, the Yadav Rajput. Under Maharaja Ganesh Pal Deo the state acceded to the Dominion of India in 1949. Later, it became a part of Rajasthan.
