Whether it’s an adventure or majestic architecture, places across the state of Telangana make for ideal weekend getaways. One of them is the capital city that reflects the Nawabs’ culture and legacy from every corner.

You can see the heritage, traditions, cultures, and architecture of centuries-old dynasties and kingdoms as you travel across the state’s innards. Chaya Someswara Temple, among many other historical structures, is an ideal weekend getaway destination. This place’s architectural splendour will astound you, and the long travel to get there will add to your enthusiasm.

Chaya Someswara Swamy temple

The temple is about 100 kilometres away from Hyderabad. It is the Hindu temple located in a small village called Panagal in Nalgonda District. In the form of Shiva Lingam, Lord Shiva is the deity of the temple. It is a lesser-known tourist attraction in the Nalgonda District.

The tranquil ambience and mild breeze from the neighbouring farms make it the ideal place to revitalise oneself. The temple’s silence will entice you to take a few deep breaths and meditate.

Architectural Wonder

Chaya Someswara Temple was built in the 11-12th century by the Chola kings. Each temple pillar engraves a story from the Hindu epics Ramayana and Mahabharat. The major attraction is that you can see a ‘chaya’ (shadow) of a pillar on the Shiva Lingam, which is astonishing because no such pillar stands in front of the deity.

The name Chaya Someswara Temple came from this mysterious shadow. It was a mystery for ages. However, by understanding the scientific calculations, archaeological experts stated that it is the reflection of light from the pillars strategically placed outside the sanctum sanctorum. It is one of those places where you can’t take your gaze away from the amazing architectural grandeur.

This temple is also known as Thrikutalayam because it contains three temples devoted to Shiva, Vishnu, and Surya within a single temple complex. Surya Shrine is in the east house, Vishnu Shrine is in the north house, and opposite Surya Shrine is Sri Someshwara Swamy Shrine.

Architectural Wonder

It is a perfect weekend destination spot, especially for those who long to explore mysterious architectural design.

How to reach?

It is just two hours drive from Hyderabad. However, you can reach the temple by train and via air. For anyone looking for a long drive, travel to Chaya Someshwara temple will fulfil your desire.

The travel takes you through a scenic drive, and you can stop at one of the dhabas on your way to fill your stomach with tasty and spicy food.

It is 1.5 km away from the Panagal bus stop.

Accommodation and food

In Nalgonda, there are hotels and lodges. Nalgonda is 4 kms distant from the shrine.

There is no unique local cuisine, but the food served at local hotels and restaurants will please your taste buds.

The temple is open from 6 a.m. to 12 p.m. and from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Conclusion

This peaceful location might be of interest to any spiritual traveller who loves mysterious structures. The ‘Chaya’ or the shadow on the Shiva lingam is a key attraction, and the temple is an architectural masterpiece that can give you a peek at Hindu epics. The trip is really worth it.
